I N F O R M A T I U MUSEUS Estiu 2001 - Núm. 51 Catalonia is a land of museums. First, because of a long tradition that, beginning with the revival of the romantic age, valued the historic heritage as a tool of cultural and political identity.
Then also because of a striving for the modernity proper to a land such as ours, where industrialisation had an vital impact on the economic life - and in consequence on the mentality - of the 19th and 20th centuries. And finally, it is a land of museums because, in contrast to what happens in other places, these have arisen from the country itself and from its society: from the people. A series of historic circums- tances meant that at the time when museums were being founded all around Europe, Catalonia lacked the royalty and aristocratic classes who could have created the collections that form the basis of the great state museums.
Here, the mu- seums arose from popular initiative, from a need in Catalan society itself. These three characteristics, therefore, de- fine our museums. We have a significant number of mu- seums created largely with the object of defining our country's identity, arising from a series of individual or association initiatives on a popular basis, which now are spurred on by an urge for modernity, in terms of museums, science and techni- que.
Our land is on the banks of the Medi- terranean, in a place of passage es- sential to communication between ... more.
north and south, forming a bridge between the millenarian cultu- res which have developed in this cradle of western civili- sation. Our museums show, then, a rich and open culture, while at the same time displaying the many influences that have come from outside th- rough the ages. This has given the Cata- lans an eclectic cultural baggage and, therefore, a welcoming spirit.
It is with this spirit that we wish to receive the members of ICOM, who will be our guests for the 21st Inter- national Assembly, to be held in Barcelona. This infor- mation is to welcome you and we hope that you will enjoy the tourist and cultural opportunities in Catalonia, and that the ICOM International Assembly may be be- neficial to all the museums in the world. L 9HOSPITALET DE LLOBREGAT New permanent exhibition of the Museu d 9Història de l 9Hospitalet NOTÍCIES 51 4 VISITES The principal floor of the Casa Museu de Can Trincheria has re- cently been opened to the public for permanent display.
This is a building from the 18C, although its current form is the product of various extensions and later renovations. The house, of great his- torical artistic value, illustrates the way of life of a wealthy family. One of the characteristic features of the house is the original de- coration of the walls, preserved in several of the rooms, with im- portant contributions such as that of Joan Carles Panyó (1755- 1840), the first director of the Olot School of Drawing and a specialist in mural decoration.
Among the furniture are an exce- llent Catalan walnut secretaire with boxwood marquetry, a pair of chests of drawers with remarkable animal paws as feet and, par- ticularly, two bedrooms, the General's bedroom and the Bishop's bedroom, where there are two Olot-style beds, with polychromed and gilded ornamental work characteristic of the Olot workshops. OLOT Opening to the public of the Casa Museu de Can Trincheria TERRASSA Opening of the photovoltaic wall at the entrance to the Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica de Catalu- nya On 23 May last in Terrassa the opening took place of the urban photovoltaic wall of co- lours, the largest in Europe. With this construction the mu- seum unites the technological past with the sustainable future.
